June 2018 - Cover Story

Danny Nicholson and his wife, Debra, were on vacation. When they stopped for dinner at their favorite seafood restaurant, they had no idea they were poised for a chance encounter that would change the course of their lives.

“I never asked the little boy’s name,” Nicholson said, “but I know who he represented. It was clear in my soul and spirit.”

Nicholson’s story starts in a rural hospital in February 1962. Born premature to unwed parents, he spent several months in the hospital before being adopted by Billy and Mary Nicholson, a county school district maintenance worker and a school teacher. The couple gave Nicholson a home filled with unconditional love and a childhood so idyllic it included a basketball hoop and a back porch, where his mother would stand to call him in for dinner.

He graduated from Charleston Southern University, went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, and pursued a lengthy career in higher education. He was involved in fund raising and college development for the Medical University of South Carolina, Carson-Newman University, Coastal Carolina University, and, most recently, Winthrop University. Danny and his wife, a first grade teacher, have two adult sons.

On that summer evening two years ago, they were looking forward to the next season of their lives together.
