Do you remember who first told you about God?

Like many of you, I grew up with a basic understanding of God. I believed he existed, somewhere out there, but didn’t think much about him otherwise. The possibility that he would want to be involved in my daily life never occurred to me—until my friend Terry asked me a pointed question.

“If you died,” he said, “do you know for sure you’d go to heaven?”

It was an intriguing question, and one I had never considered. At 16-years-old, I was thinking much more about living than dying. But his question piqued my curiosity because of how he phrased it: “Do you know for sure . . . ?”

I remember that phone conversation as if it were yesterday. Sitting on the floor just inside my bedroom doorway with the 20-foot phone cord stretched to its limits, I listened as Terry told me how I could know for sure I’d go to heaven one day.* It was as natural a conversation as if we were discussing the day’s Algebra assignment, but it changed my life forever.

This month’s issue of Reach Out, Columbia contains two stories very similar to mine.
