December 2015 - Editor's Letter

“But now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you…:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name;
you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you…”

This familiar verse took on new meaning to hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians this past October. Many lost their cars, homes, businesses, and some even their lives in the floods that devastated our state.

Sadly, the Reach Out, Columbia office and its sponsoring business, Divine Consign, were also swept away. In addition to the contents of the popular consignment store, several computers, ROC’s filing system, which contained archives dating back to the magazine’s beginning, and hundreds of undelivered copies of the newly printed October issue were lost.

Sandra Byrd, ROC’s publisher and DC’s owner, has made the difficult decision not to reopen Divine Consign, but she remains steadfast in her commitment to the ministry of Reach Out, Columbia. “The devastating flood destroyed our office, but it didn’t destroy our mission. We stand with our feet firmly planted on the Rock for ROC.”

“The biggest obstacle we face right now,” she says, “is our lack of financial support. Without flood insurance, we are struggling to recover and restore.”
