January 2016 - Editor's Letter

On January 1, 2015, there was a lot I didn’t know.

I didn’t know that by year’s end our family would have gained a son-in-law and a granddaughter. I didn’t know my husband would have the pleasure of pastoring a small church in Shandon. I didn’t know my eldest would move to Japan, my youngest would move to Lexington, and my mother-in-law would move to Heaven.

I didn’t know our year would be an intricately woven tapestry of joy, sorrow, health, and sickness. I didn’t know there would be strands of brilliant happiness bordered by dark threads of fear. I didn’t know my husband would walk down one aisle holding our bride daughter on his arm and another following his beloved mother’s casket.

The longer I live, the more I understand that the future isn’t ours to know. Perhaps this is God’s mercy. Like a parent wrapping presents for his child at Christmas, he knows that sometimes there is greatest joy in being completely surprised by something wonderful. And like the same parent, he knows that being forewarned of tomorrow’s sadness steals the joy from today.

The new year is upon us, pregnant with 365 days, should the Lord delay his coming. I’m greatly comforted by the fact that while we do not know what 2016 holds, God does.
