n the magazine world, we work months ahead. The issue you’re holding in your hand was planned in early summer, edited in September, and laid out in October. I’m writing this editor’s letter as the winds and rain of Hurricane Florence pummel our state.

Every few hours I check the television for updates, trying to stay informed without becoming fearful. It’s hard to watch images of waves splashing against someone’s living room fireplace and newsfeeds from storm-tossed Myrtle Beach without hurting for our coastal neighbors.

One story, however, made my heart especially sad. A first responder reported that his team had already received calls from 57 foolish people who had ignored the governor’s mandatory evacuation order and stayed in their homes. True to the warnings they’d received, flood waters had stranded them in perilous situations. Brave, noble men and women risked their lives to rescue them.

As you’ll read in this month’s issue of Reach Out, Columbia, heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Todd Starnes, our cover story subject, is courageously broadcasting the stories of believers throughout our country who are taking stands for faith and freedom. World War II veteran, Lairy Easterling, is an example of another kind of hero.
